Summer Solstice Yoga Mala

Summer Solstice Yoga MalaWhat a weekend.  Besides getting ready for a great vacation, our quarterly Yoga Mala Event was held as well.  We had beautiful weather all day.  Until 3:00 p.m. the Mala started at 4:00 p.m.  We do 108 sun salutes 4 times a year for different charities in need.  It didn’t just rain, it was a monsoon!  The old building we were in is gorgeous.  It’s an old Firehouse.  The garage doors were part way open flowing with pretty fabric.  The huge double, wooden doors that beautifully frame the courtyard were open.  It didn’t just rain, it blew, visibility was low.  The place flooded a little bit, but it was all good.  It backs right up to railroad tracks.  There’s just something about the place, it has a great feel.  Water receded quickly!  We had a great turnout and raised $462 which was split for Doctors Without Borders and SAAF – Springfield Animal Advocacy Foundation.  I’m sore, as I usually am after this event, but it’s a good feeling knowing it was for a good cause and it won’t last long!  Today, we clean up and pack up around here.  Time to go to Florida for a much needed, and what feels like, long overdue vacation to visit my family!  Think of me on the beach!

Mold

High WaterI have allergies.  I seem to keep them at bay with yoga and the breathing that comes with that.  But, we’ve had some serious rain, heat and humidity!  It’s flat moldy outside, you can smell it in the air.  Our a/c runs full force to constantly remove this heavy air.  I’ve been meeting a good friend and practicing yoga twice a week at 6 in the morning.  I didn’t make it on Tuesday due to the massive sun burn I received last Thursday at the pool.  I was so concerned about this little red headed, freckled girl that was with us, I forgot about my own skin!  On Sunday, we swam.  Well I swam with a t-shirt on at my sister-in-laws house.  I was there a whole 10 minutes when a wasp landed on the right side of my face and stung me!  But, that’s part of Summer and it’s OK.  This morning a massive sinus headache crept in.  I woke up with a heavy head, can’t clear my throat and my ears popping.  No early yoga, it just wasn’t going to happen.  Not to mention, my husband grinds the hell out of his teeth.  Seriously.  I did not sleep well.  It doesn’t happen all the time, just when he’s stressed I believe.  One of his employees decided to quit last night, so he was calling everyone, making new schedules and rearranging hours and things.  I do not miss having to do that – at all.  I also helped a friend out with her two kids yesterday afternoon as she had an appointment.  The girls are older now, mine’s 10, hers are 9 and 5 and they actually all three got a long really good.  Nice to know, my headache didn’t come from them!  They jumped on the trampoline, played LIFE and Littlest Pet Shops.  My son on the other hand, has a headache, and still does.  He started cross country this week, lots of running, outdoors.  He doesn’t normally have allergies, but I assured him, people that aren’t normally bothered by this – will be!

Son of Rambow

I took my kids to an independent movie theater, The Moxie today.  It’s a small theater where they serve cool eats, beer and wine.  The movie reminded me of a British “Stand By Me” feel good kind of film.  It was cute, funny and a nice change from other movies we see all too often.  My daughter (who is 10) thought the theater was cool because they have art on the walls and soda pop in real glass bottles!  My son (who is 15) didn’t think the movie was as funny as the preview led him to believe, and it had too much drama.  He also said it was, “too British.”  So much for instilling culture into that kid.  But he did ask if I would take him back to see Morgan Spurlock’s “Where in the world is Osama Bin Laden.”  We might be on to something here.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Flood June 13, 2008Enough is enough!  Yesterday, we got 3.88″ of rain in like 6 hours.  I don’t know where they were doing the measuring, but our once empty 5 gallon bucket on our deck had 6.25″!  There is a creek way down back of our property.  It overflowed accordingly as it often does.  The problem doesn’t do much to our place, just makes for an extremely soggy yard.  It does flood out other people in the area and at times like this, I’m glad we don’t have a basement. The water was so high at the intersection South of us, the road had to be closed.  That’s where the creek flows under the road.  Wait, correction.  The creek was flowing over the road!  Cars stallled trying to drive through.  They had to be pushed out.  The water receded quickly once the rain stopped.  All that was left today on the street, were hoses.  Basements being pumped out, carpet strewn out on the sidewalk, stuff like that.  It was beautiful, hot and sunny today.  Tomorrow, they’re calling for another 4″ of rain.  Oh boy.  Happy Father’s Day!

The Sub

It rained.  All day long.  We are going to float away here.  I feel for the people who have basements.  We don’t have one.  I did a little shopping for a birthday gift.  Ended up at one of my favorite new age bookstores.  The place is awesome, as they have new and used books.  They have all sorts of other cool stuff too, and whenever you buy a book there, it smells really, really good.  They say they don’t pump anything in, it’s just all the incense and stuff.  Wow.  It’s amazing.  I love to come home and fan through all the books I just bought and take in the scent.  Long story short, I got the birthday gift, and ended up spending $70 total.  It’s nice to have a $40 gift card when you walk in places like that!  I was grateful as today, I hit the jackpot on books!  Last minute, my yoga teacher called.  She was feeling icky and asked if I could sub for her.  Of course, I wasn’t doing anything else this evening.  I headed to the studio, in the rain.  Had 3 regulars and one from out of town on business.  Fun group, great little class.  Glad she asked me to do it, I feel better from just setting foot in the studio.  It has a way of doing that, and  like it!  When I got home, my husband and son had gone fishing.  My daughter, was playing spy.  She had a little suitcase loaded up with a notepad, some highlighters, a compass, a watch, 2 flashlights and anything that Nancy Drew might need.  Just imagine, if all we needed was a spy kit and the Disney channel for total satisfaction.  Oh, to be 10 years old again.

Two

I teach yoga.  I didn’t always teach yoga.  I owned a video store, for 12 years.  It was as much fun as it was stressful and I must say, the money wasn’t too bad.  But that’s over now and I teach yoga whenever and wherever I can.  This morning, I had a class.  It’s a new class, in a new beautiful building.  Only one other person showed up.  My first teacher.  I was relieved since I had a party with a bottle of Merlot and myself last night, while I was trying to start this blog!  I had a bunch of great instructional CD’s on my iPod, so we indulged ourselves and took a class from one of our favorite master teachers.  After the class, we showed the new space around to a few folks who showed up late.  It’s a green building, with a  planted roof.  It’s really cool.  New classes are hard to start up from scratch.  If you have a needy group that wants a class, that’s a different story.  It’s Summertime, things will be hit and miss.  And if you teach yoga, you know exactly what I mean.

Sex & and the City

Saw it today!  Was not disappointed, went by quickly, loved it!  Predictable?  Yes.  Did I care?  No.  Do I hope they make a sequel?  Yes.  Something to be said for a mozarella and tomato salad for lunch, great conversation and a little shopping topped off with entertainment!  Saturdays like this are far and few.  Our theater was sweltering.  We’ve had a ton of rain, so it’s super humid here in the Midwest.  We complained.  Score for us.  We each received a free movie ticket!  We’ll be back.  Perhaps to see the new Luke Wilson flick.  The name of the film has left me.  Anyhow, an image of Jesus appears on the side of Luke Wilson’s stucco home.  Just what we all need right?  If it happens to me, you can bet, I’ll be cashing in on it!  Just like that image of Jesus that appeared on that grilled cheese sandwich that showed up on ebay.  Check back tomorrow.  Perhaps the mold on the North side of our house is a diety in the making!
