Flowers in Florida

Every time we have cold, snowy weather here in Missouri (like today) my parents send me photos like this-

Just a little bouquet they picked from their yard resting at pool side.

Or perhaps an orchid that they finally got to bloom.orchid1

Then, they top off the e-mail by letting me know they will be taking a trip to Peru this Spring.

They’re going with a personal tour guide and will be imitating this itinerary.

You have no idea how envious I am.  Peru is my dream trip, and someday I will get there.

Enjoy!

Octup-What?

I don’t watch Oprah very often, but today I did.

The show today was all about Nadya Suleman and her slew of children.  This bothers me.  I do not understand why anyone would want to have so many children, especially on their own, without a job.  It appears this whole multiple birth stuff is big business.  My daughter’s favorite show is Jon and Kate Plus EightI personally cannot stand that show.  If I wanted to listen to a bunch of kids screaming, playing and whatnot, I would’ve had more kids or chose to have a daycare here in my home.  I chose neither.  Another show my daughter likes to watch on occasion is 18 Kids and CountingI have one biological daughter, who was basically an only child until I married Frank and with that union came a stepbrother five years her senior.

So what’s the fascination with these shows and these multiple birth situations?

I think medical technology is truly amazing, I really do.  Someone Nadya’s age should’ve been implanted with 2 eggs, not 6.  They flashed the egg implant rule on the screen.  I feel in Nadya’s case, her doctor was way out of line and so was she.  Why?  Because she already has 6 kids!  I read someplace that she receives $600 per month, per child.  Whoa.  Take that times 14 and that’s $8,400 a month.  I realize that might not go far in some areas, but here where I live that’s a pretty decent income.  I know, I know.  She has to buy all those diapers, all that formula and all that botox for her upper lip.  Her father said today on Oprah, she was an only child and perhaps is trying to fill a void.  I guess some people fill the gap with food, some fill it with alcohol, some fill it with heroin and others with kids.  Such a scary thought.   On Oprah, there was a mention that her house payment had not been made since May.  Really?  Where will she go?  Can a mortgage company foreclose a home on such a situation?  Should she be exempt?  All I know is this.  We will be the ones paying for this, all of it.  She  even has a personal web site where you can offer donations.  I’m not even putting the link up here.

The Duggar’s are another story.  Those people used no medical technology, they just keep breeding on their own.  The Duggar mom is still alive (I’d be dead) and just gave birth to their 18th child in December.  I cannot get into the whole religion and birth control thing they have going on.  There’s just not enough room on this blog.  These people do not watch TV, but they have a television show, a DVD and a website.  WTF?

Jon and Kate are a two parent family, that happen to have two sets of multiples.  Yes, they had help.  They do not seem crazy by my standards in any way, shape or form.  And I’m guessing living their life out on a day to day basis on TLC is paying their bills quite nicely.  It makes me wonder.  How many shows like this can we have?  How many people will go to this extreme to get free stuff, TV shows and publicity?

I think back to when I had my video store.  It was located in the “lower income” side of town.  In our strip center was my video store, a smoke shop, a liquor store and an auto parts store.  All in that order.  People came in carrying their dirty kids clad in diapers only, grabbed their videos, hit next door for that carton of cigarettes, then on to the liquor store for that 6-pack o’beer.  It’s a free country and I am glad.  But there are times I feel that some people should be sterile at birth and have to obtain some sort of permit before they’re allowed to reproduce.

I’m hoping with the blended sibling here in our home, my daughter will not need to fill a “void” by having 27 kids.

You Go Bro!

evtuxThis year has been a bit taxing for my siblings in the job department.  My sister used to work for David Weekly Homes in their design center.  That company is pretty much non-existent in SW Florida as of now.  She’s not been able to find solid, stable employment in her area until………..probably tomorrow.  This company will be throwing her an offer that I’m sure she won’t be able to refuse.  All I know is this.  If and when she ends up showing furniture in Milan or Paris, she must take me!  It seems this company sells high dollar furnishings and they’ve not yet been hit by the economic crunch.  Amazing.  I wish her all the luck in the world.

My brother (seen in the red Yakima hat on the left) has had a series of cool jobs managing bike stores for stints of two to three years at a time.  After his visit here over Thanksgiving, he returned home to find that he no longer had a job.  He’s not married, he doesn’t own a home and has no children.  It’s a bit easier for him to be unstable than those of us with mortgages and families.  Luckily for him he just landed a new job as a rep for Yakima.  The poor guy just returned from Portland, OR and Sacramento, CA.  They’ve provided him with a company car, a blackberry and a pretty cool itenerary.

Hopefully, our town will be on his route to somewhere as his territory is pretty darn big!

Where’s My Birth Certificate?

William's Birth Certificate by Paula Bird Parent

I’m not sure when it happened for our town, but sometime they changed the rules on the renewal of the driver’s license.  They also changed the venues and I will say, the people that work there are now smiling and actually seem happy to have a job.  When you go to renew now, you must bring your birth certificate.  I have mine, I have one for my daughter and one for my son.  My husband was in need of his for his driver’s license renewal and it was no where to be found.  Being that he’s in law enforcement he sometimes “gets around” things (I know, it’s not fair) so he headed out to try and renew without it.  No go.

My husband was adopted.  His birth certificate (if we find it) says “Dr. W’s boy” and they said that would not be acceptable anyways.  So now a trip to the Health Department is in order, to file and pay for a new birth certificate with all the proper names on it.  I guess back in 1963 if you were good “friends” with a doctor they could get you a kid, for free!  Actually, you could get two as his sister was adopted as well, but they are not from the same family.  Basically, Dr. W called up Frank’s mom and dad and said, “hey, do you want a boy?”  They replied with a huge yes, and the doctor said, “OK, I’ll bring him over tomorrow.”  Wow, just like that.  Instant kid.  No paperwork, no money exchanged.  Just a bundle of joy handed over and a thank you!

We have no information about his biological parents.  He’s tried for cultural heritage and medical history and all he found was this.  His biological mother lived in Billings, MO and for some reason she went to a hospital in Mansfield, MO to give birth.  Teenager perhaps?  Unfortunately, in 1963 births were not posted in the newspaper.  All of the records from the hospital in Mansfield were transferred to St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, MO sometime long ago.  Unfortunately, the records department at St. John’s experienced a massive fire way back when and everything they had was destroyed.

So if anyone out there, knows of anyone that was pregnant in Billings, MO and happened to give birth to a boy in Mansfield in February of 1963, we’d love to talk with you!

Valentine’s Day Canoe Box?

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Last night was create the Valentine box night.  Lauren attends a conservation based 5th grade (WOLF) so she wanted something wolfish.  We decided on a canoe, then of course, we had to figure out how we were gonna make it happen.  It all worked using one small box, some construction paper, wooden chop sticks and pipe cleaners.  Though she didn’t win the contest, her friends loved her boat!

They had their Valentine party this afternoon and in the morning they had a field trip to Bois D’Arc.  That’s where the archery and shooting ranges are located.  They also do nature based crafts.  She’s one of a handful of kids that won’t shoot the guns out there.  She cannot close the proper eye and she doesn’t like it covered.  It’s ok.  She still had a great time and made an awesome birdhouse (the kind you tack to a tree) out of wood instead.

I can’t believe how grown up she looks in this photo!!

Shrug Your Shoulders

tti-shoulders-4I had a total blast leading this Shoulder Workshop last Saturday at Teach to Inspire.  There were 6 or so from the training program, then another 6 or so from other places like the studio or the YMCA.  Beth’s new place is warm and inviting and I love being there.  The floor is soft bamboo and the walls are bran muffin with wine colored accent walls at either end.  It’s just the right size and glows with warm energy!  I must make it there this Sunday, to take a class, just for me!

I was worried I wouldn’t have enough stuff to fill three hours.  Think again.  I could’ve went on and on.  I left one whole idea out (it was using therabands for strengthening the shoulders) and I do not regret that one bit.  I did think of several other things we could’ve put to good use afterwards of course.  So we put them to good use today in my noon class.  I had someone show up with a tight neck and shoulders, so the class turned out to be “pretty workshoppy” and it was fun!

The next class I’ll be doing over there is the Psoas Muscle Workshop.  I really like that muscle, it’s cool and has a lot going on.  I did this class once before and was extremely well attended, so I’m excited to put it together once again.  I can’t believe this is work, it’s so much fun!!!

tti-shoulders-3Thanks to everyone that showed up and made this class so much fun.  I really had a blast!

Webkinz Sock Clothes

100_3365We’re a crafty bunch around here.  Someone is always fixing something, or making something out of nothing and our daughter is no exception!  The other night, while pondering over her 15 or so Webkinz, she decided that they needed some clothes.  She bolted to her room and came back with a bunch of colored socks that she could no longer wear.  I know, bad mom for not cleaning out the sock drawer.  Gone are the days when I spent cleaning out closets and making everything look beautiful.  Come on over, I’ll prove it to you.  Anyhow, she started chopping up socks (here at my computer desk, the art table of choice that evening) and really made some cool stuff.  100_3357

Using a scissors only and some magic markers, she hooked her Webkinz up with some rad sweaters and hats!  How cool is that?  Cool I say.  It’s not costing me any blasted trips to the toy aisle, she’s happy and we’re cleaning out the sock drawer.  Until she decided she wanted to use a needle and thread because, “they needed book bags, a quilt, booties and scarves.”  Oh boy.

I can sew on buttons, I can do simple repair jobs and I used to do a ton of embroirdery and cross stitch.  But this was serious stuff.  A quilt?  Out of socks?  OK.

She had it all planned out, she’ll cut out the scrap socks and sew them together.  I showed her how to stitch them together, not beautifully, but basically.  She was ecstatic!  She used the ends of socks to wrap around their feet and sewed on a button for adorable booties.  She sewed handles on the book bags.  She decorated the sweaters and book bags with sharpies as her way of snazzing up the older socks.  100_3363 100_33661How innovative she is!

Tonight, I subbed a class to come home and find that she’d been on the Webkinz craft site.  There she found an idea for a Webkinz cupid.  There goes my white card stock for wings, a white pipe cleaner for the halo and another pipe cleaner and paper heart for the arrow.  Adorable.

But…….you should see my desk right now, like I said earlier, it’s the art spot of choice!100_3368
