New Year’s Day Hike

I love to walk.

As a matter of fact, if I’m out in nature I could probably kill an entire day.

But I didn’t have an entire day on the first day of 2011, so I killed a couple of hours.  The Nature Center is a great place to go.  The place was actually closed, but everyone pretty much parks beyond the gate and scales in anyways.  Me and about 3 other people that is, because that’s how many I came into contact with.  What a quiet day.  The deer were tame, the birds were plenty and the landscape was serene.  It was a pretty cold day but that didn’t bother me.  Not until I realized I’d left my fingerless gloves in the car.  The ones that my mom got me on her trip to New Zealand.  My hands got a tad cold toting my camera.  But I was able to shoot several photos none the less.  For those who haven’t seen them on Facebook, enjoy.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Last night was create the Valentine box night.  Lauren attends a conservation based 5th grade (WOLF) so she wanted something wolfish.  We decided on a canoe, then of course, we had to figure out how we were gonna make it happen.  It all worked using one small box, some construction paper, wooden chop sticks and pipe cleaners.  Though she didn’t win the contest, her friends loved her boat!

They had their Valentine party this afternoon and in the morning they had a field trip to Bois D’Arc.  That’s where the archery and shooting ranges are located.  They also do nature based crafts.  She’s one of a handful of kids that won’t shoot the guns out there.  She cannot close the proper eye and she doesn’t like it covered.  It’s ok.  She still had a great time and made an awesome birdhouse (the kind you tack to a tree) out of wood instead.

I can’t believe how grown up she looks in this photo!!

Dumped, from a Canoe

Today, my daughter has orchestra first thing.  After that, they load up and head to a lake for canoe and kayak safety.  She wore her bathing suit, quick dry shorts, sweatpants a T-shirt and sunscreen!  We packed a lunch, filled a water bottle and made sure the hat was in the backpack.

I guess they’re going to dump them out of the boats!  The morning is cool today, so I’m sure the water won’t be much better!  On Tuesday, they spent the day at a creek, snorkeling and studying fish.  They’re also learning hunting safety in the classroom, which she thinks is kind of boring.

My son, just rolls his eyes at all of this.  He’s a big outdoorsman.  He was a junior zoo keeper at our local zoo for two years.  He also volunteered at Wonder’s of Wildlife museum, until they decided to completely renovate it, so it’s closed for like a year!  Wish they would’ve had this awesome school when he was in 5th grade, it’s truly been an amazing experience for Lauren so far!
